Welcome to the debut of the Maine EMS Micro-Learning Series! In our first installment, we're tackling common documentation errors in MEFIRS. Effective November 3, 2025, new validation rules (Rule 3725 & 3728) require a matching successful vascular access procedure for any medication given via IV or IO routes.
In this video, we break down:
  • Why Rule 3725 flags your medication route.
  • Why Rule 3728 flags your entire procedures grid.
  • How to document "Pre-existing lines" for Transfers and ALS Intercepts.
  • The list of 7 specific procedure codes that satisfy the requirement.
Don't let validation points drop your score. Learn how to document accurately and efficiently with Maine EMS.

As an EMS professional, you likely work long hours, are exposed to emotionally stressful situations, and do physically demanding work. This can contribute to feelings of burnout. Burnout is a threat to the health and wellbeing of EMS clinicians, patient care, and the EMS profession. Given the nature of your work, it may not be possible to eliminate stress from your job, but steps can be taken to help manage work-related stress and prevent burnout.

In your role as an EMS clinician, you face numerous risks and hazards. One of those risks comes from exposure to a blood-borne infection from the people you are helping. During some medical emergencies, you may encounter a person with open wounds and the presence of blood or other body fluids. You may need to perform advanced life support procedures using needles and other sharp instruments. This puts you at an increased risk of becoming infected with pathogens like HIV or hepatitis.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or OSHA) has developed a standard that includes safeguards to protect workers against health hazards caused by blood-borne pathogens. This training covers important safety protocols to protect workers who can reasonably anticipate coming into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials while performing their job duties.
